Vein Treatment Q & A

When might I need vein treatment?

If you have spider veins — thin threadlike veins — or varicose veins — thick ropelike twisted veins — you may want vein treatment simply because the veins detract from your appearance. But, in many cases, the physical appearance is just one problematic aspect of veins.

If you have any of the following issues, it's likely due at least partially to your veins.

  • Frequent leg cramps
  • Restless legs
  • Tired feeling legs
  • Heavy feeling legs
  • Leg swelling
  • Leg cramps
  • Sleep difficulty
  • Back pain
  • Leg pain
  • Foot pain

A vein disease called venous insufficiency can cause these symptoms even if you don't have obvious large veins on your legs.

How does vein treatment work?

If you have spider veins, varicose veins, or other symptoms of vein disease, the first step is a simple 20-minute diagnostic ultrasound at Wellness and Surgery.

This painless, non-invasive test determines whether venous insufficiency — overwhelmingly the most common circulatory cause of leg pain — is the reason for your discomfort.

Based on your test results, the team can plan a treatment that relieves your symptoms quickly in the office.

What does vein treatment involve?

The most common treatment for symptoms related to venous insufficiency is radiofrequency ablation.

In this procedure, the vein experts heat the inside of your veins to force them to shrink and wither. The blood in these veins redirects to healthy veins. Radiofrequency ablation essentially disrupts the source of your vein disease, so in addition to symptom relief, you may also notice significant vein fading.

Radiofrequency ablation takes just 10 minutes to treat two veins, and the treatment's virtually painless. You'll wear a compression bandage for 24 hours after your radiofrequency ablation procedure, but you can usually walk out of the Wellness and Surgery office and resume your day right away.

Lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, can sometimes help to relieve vein-related symptoms, and maintaining a healthy weight can help you prevent future vein disease.
