5 Tips for Maintaining Your Wellness During the Holidays

It’s that time of year again! The holiday season is here, and so is the stress and bustle that comes with it. The only difference this year is, well, everything…

With the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, holidays this year will require some health and safety precautions most of us didn’t have to think about a year ago. (The CDC has released a number of resources detailing preventative measures you can take to help protect yourself and your family this holiday here). In addition to guidelines set out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Wellness & Surgery is offering up our own list of tips to help you maintain your wellness during the holidays. 1. Wellness & Hygiene

This one’s a given, but if you truly want to focus on your wellness this holiday season, regular hand washing is a must. Wash your hands often—especially after touching high traffic objects or hugging loved ones. Also, avoid touching your face, eyes, nose and mouth at all costs. If you must, be sure to wash your hands first.

2. Wellness & Movement

Daily exercise is key to maintaining your wellness during the holidays. Not only does it help burn off that extra slice of apple pie you knew you could’ve gone without, daily exercise increases your energy levels and promotes a sound sense of self—mind, body and spirit. What’s more, when you exercise, oxygen and nutrients get delivered to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more proficiently—thereby increasing your circulation. 3. Wellness & Sleep

Getting the proper amount of sleep for your body is crucial for promoting and maintaining wellness—especially during the holidays. More importantly, you’ll want to ensure you’re not just getting enough hours of sleep, but good quality sleep as well. Thankfully, sleep has a symbiotic relationship with exercise, eating, and stress management. In other words, adequate, high-quality sleep allows you to feel more energized, therefore priming your body to exercise more efficiently. Getting enough sleep is also linked to making healthier food choices and eating less sugar and junk food. Finally, when the body gets the sleep it needs, the mind is able to take on more stress without feeling easily burnt out.

4. Wellness & Diet

The holidays make it difficult to not overdo it when it comes to food. Family gatherings and events often mean four or five-course meals and mouth-watering spreads—and listen, we get it. It’s hard to pass up that second serving of Aunt May’s homemade pumpkin pie, especially when it’s been on your mind since last Thanksgiving. But one thing the ongoing pandemic does is help put things into perspective. When you realize that your food is fuel for your body, and the quality of your “fuel” helps build your immune system — which plays a key role in how your body reacts when it comes face-to-face with viruses and bacteria – it makes saying “no thank you” to that second slice of pie a bit easier.

One thing you are certainly in control of during the holidays is the food you choose to keep in your fridge. Stocking your shelves with healthy and nutritious fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats is a surefire way to help maintain your wellness this holiday season.

5. Wellness & Hydration

Last but not least, if you truly want to maintain your wellness this holiday season, remember this one, simple word: hydration.

According to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health:

Drinking enough water each day is crucial for many reasons: to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly. Being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood.

That’s right, staying hydrated promotes physical wellness across the board. Maintaining adequate hydration levels allows your body to prevent infection, therefore making you less susceptible to infection and illness caused by virus and bacteria.

The obvious ways to hydrate your body include drinking water and eating water-rich foods (think: fruits and veggies, soups and broths, even skim milk is made up of 91% water). But what you may not realize is that simply drinking water and eating foods with high water content does not imply adequate hydration….
